Middle East

Sports Gift has distributed sports equipment through the United States military in the Middle East. These children are living in a worn torn existence and many have lost all hope. The sports equipment is used by the military to improve their relations with the communities in which they are stationed. Below are some of the stories from the Middle East region:

2011

Armenia

Partner Organization: Peace Corps
Items Donated: 190
Children Impacted: 250

This gift of sports equipment included soccer jerseys, soccer balls, cones, basketballs, volleyballs, air pumps and ultimate Frisbees sets. This equipment is going to a higher educational institute in Armenia. It is in the city of Goris, which lacks many resources. The gymnasium of the college here is severely damaged and lacks equipment to train the physical education students and to keep the students active and fit. Without sports equipment the college may have to discontinue its physical education program.

Iraq

Partner Organization: Victory Base Council / Iraqi Scouting Program
Items Donated: 831
Children Impacted: 500+

This gift of sports equipment included soccer balls, soccer uniforms, soccer cleats, basketballs, footballs, running shoes and other sports equipment. This is a group of military and civilian volunteers stationed on the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad, Iraq whose mission is "doing our best" to support the fledgling Iraqi Scouting Program. The children of Iraq have suffered through many years of war, terrorism, economic sanctions, etc. This group is trying to teach Iraqi children to respect others, how to be good citizens, basic skills such as personally hygiene, dental hygiene, educational subjects and sports. Sport is the key that keeps the kids coming, as the group teaches them about baseball, football, soccer and basketball, which they have never seen.

Iraq

Items Donated: 263
Children Impacted: 100+
This gift included soccer balls, uniforms, cleats, shin guards and playground equipment. The gift was given to a US marine platoon stationed in the outskirts of Baghdad in Iraq to give to the children living in the community. The living conditions are horrible with no running water or electricity and much of the community has been destroyed by war leaving families in tents and mud huts. The marine reported that you can look into these kids eyes and see they haven't been happy for a long time, if ever.
